Networking is one of the most scariest things for an introvert especially when you already have social anxiety. However it's possible to network successfully while being introverted or on the shy side.
Here are some practical tips to consider for your next event.
Step 1: Re-define networking
Reframe your current beliefs or views on networking. Instead of saying to yourself "How do I impress this person, or would this person judge me. Ask yourself "How can I learn more about this person and see if we can help each other.
Step 2: Arrive early
Arriving early can help ease the anxiety of not only check in but beating the large crowds. Conversations tend to be more relaxed and easier to mingle through.
Step 3: Start small and make specific goals
Large networking events like expos and summits can be overwhelming with large numbers of people. It would be helpful to start going to smaller community focused events and industry meets up to get accumulated before going to large events.
Step 4: Prepare conversation starters
Prepare a few simple questions in your head to ask when you meet someone. For example, What bought to the event today? what is your current industry or role?
Step 5: Use your listening skills
Before responding, fully listen to what the other person is saying. Ask thoughtful follow up questions and pay attention to details.
Step 6: Pay attention to your body
Networking is a lot. You don't have to speak to every single person in the room. Find 1 or 2 people that share similar interest and connect with them.
Moreover, take breaks, whenever it is a bathroom break or water/snack break. It's important to pay attention to your body and when you feel overwhelmed.
